The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa's second-largest party and a member of the country's coalition government, has announced its opposition to any potential tax increases. This comes after local media reports suggested that the finance ministry is considering additional levies to address revenue shortfalls and stabilize government debt. In a statement emailed on Sunday, the DA stated, "The DA strongly opposes any tax increases and does not support increases to personal income tax, corporate income tax, and value-added tax."
According to a report by the Sunday Times, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana may be exploring options to raise value-added tax (VAT), personal income tax, and corporate taxes. These measures are reportedly aimed at offsetting a revenue gap and supporting the government's debt stabilization efforts. The Treasury, however, declined to comment, citing the closed period ahead of Godongwana's annual budget presentation on Wednesday.
