The UK has strongly condemned the occupation of Goma and other territories in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by the M23 rebels and Rwandan Defence Forces (RDF), calling it an unacceptable violation of DRC’s sovereignty and the UN Charter. In a statement, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) emphasized that Rwanda’s actions pose a significant risk to regional stability. The UK has demanded the immediate withdrawal of RDF from Congolese territory and warned that the international community would respond strongly to the attack on Goma, as previously communicated to Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
The humanitarian situation in eastern DRC has reached a critical level, with over 800,000 people at risk of losing vital food and nutritional assistance due to the ongoing conflict. The UK has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, urging all parties to facilitate humanitarian access and return to inclusive diplomatic talks. The statement stressed that there can be no military solution to the crisis and highlighted the importance of African-led peace processes.
In light of Rwanda’s actions, the UK is actively considering next steps, including a potential review of all its support to Rwanda. The FCDO spokesperson reiterated the UK’s commitment to working with international partners to address the crisis and hold those responsible accountable. The situation remains a pressing concern for regional stability and humanitarian efforts.
